The concept of a “Personal Brand” has been repeated over and over by so-called personal brand strategists until it has become somewhat of a cliche.
But, what does it mean to have a Personal Brand?
In short, it’s about taking back the reigns of your reputation. As the CEO of your company, you already know how important that is. Who you are –what you stand for– matters. And a lot.
In today’s age, your reputation is a game played digitally –in the Internet. And you have to adapt. Here’s what I mean with that:
I want you to think about the last time you were introduced to a new business connection. You slurred your name (I get it –it was an open bar) and that you were a CEO at XYZ. Maybe you even gave him or her your business card.
But guess what’s the first thing that he did after you turned away to grab another glass of red wine?
I promise you: he Googled you.
He Googled you because he wanted to know more about who you are, what your company’s about, what are your thoughts on the industry, what’s going on in your life, etc.
Do you think he was impressed by what he saw?
I don’t know. Go ‘head, check for yourself. Google your name –right now–, what shows up?
Is it dozens of well-crafted articles that show your expertise?
Or is it your own Podcast where you talk about relevant industry news?
Or a professionally-produced video series you host?
Or… … … is it nothing at all?
Believe it or not, that can be the difference between closing a deal or not. Or receiving a book deal or not. Or being offered a new, highly-profitable opportunity or not.
But that’s not the only benefit of having a personal brand. Because you’re consistently creating valuable content, you’ll also grow an organic following –whether that’s on social media, email list, etc.– of people who consider you a though leader and trust you.
You can then redirect them towards current and future business ventures that you might approach. Can you imagine what it means to have a built-in audience as a CEO?
- You write a book… and you already KNOW you will sell copies.
- You start a new business… and you KNOW you will have clients coming to you instead of you having to seek them out.
- You want to start consulting for businesses… and you KNOW people will be knocking at your door (more like trying to smash it down).
- And so on.
